I'm starting my own computer repair business on the side and I'm trying to come up with good prices for my future customers. I'm a little on the fence about a few, so I was seeing if you all wouldn't mind helping.

- If you were to pay a certified computer technician to work on your computer (in your home) at an hourly rate, what would you be comfortable paying per hour? What would be the most you would pay per hour? Would the task the technician is doing matter? What would be the max time you would want a technician in your home?

well to be honest i'm the only one that does anything on my computer, for legal reasons but, i have several computer in the house hold and if there is something is wrong with one i tend to get a tech out but thats because it is free, all my electrical equipment is covered and i can call no matter how small the problem from whats does a certain process do from the taskmanager to getting struck by lightening, but then and again it is very rare i get them out.

but to answer your questions if it was somebody doing it on the side and has no insurance ect i would only be willing to pay a set amount for the job no matter how long it took them rather than an hourly rate and the amount would vary depening on the task in hand to format and install windows i would expect it to be done within an hour and a half and would not pay more than £10 which i think works out to be around $16.5

Thats kind of a hard question for me to answer.  I work with HP's R&D in Colorado, I spend all day breaking and fixing systems so if there is an issue I wouldnt be able to handle, needing a tech to come out to my house, it would be an issues that would probably need equipment replaced which I can do on my own.

Now there are a few businesses around here that offer "PC Repair" for ppl unlike myself and I laugh when I hear the prices they charge.  I've heard that best buy charges 40 bucks to install memory or $60 to install an OS/restore disc.  I've heard of small businesses charging anywhere in the rate of $55 - $75 and hour for repairs.  I dont know what your area has, but if you want to be competitive I would look at the rates in your local area and charge maybe 10% less then the average going rate so you can get some business through the door.

Thats just my two cents.

I WOULD SAY IF YOU charged $35 an hour with a $50 minium you would have many people calling you.
