I build my own, but we have had both at work.  Three years ago I would have said Dell, but lately they have gone down hill IMO.  We run alot of HP/Compaq's desktops at work, and all of our servers are HP.

Im an HP guy.  Ive always used Dells for simple tasks, but all of my HP equipment has been used for the high end use.  But if it wasnt for the fact that I get all of my equipment for free right now from HP I would do what UFANS does.  I would build my own system.

I couldn't agree more... Professionally, I've bought millions of dollars of PC's from both. My technicians always preferred working on Dell boxes and the users generally preferred them - definitely the laptops. Side note, Toshiba or Lenova for laptops (PC) all the way. Personally, as others have said, I'd go custom. What disappoints me is the news out lately that Dell knowingly shipped millions of PC's a few years ago that had defective parts - even after the good parts were available (someone got a deal on those defective parts). I'll give some props to Dell for their case designs - screwless, easy access to the main parts - not so good for upgrading sometimes.

I have no love for either as I have used both extensively.
