My in-laws bought an older version of this laptop. It lasted about two years. Its good for the money, but there isnt much it can do. Its more for simple internet access and light word processing.
Just my 2 cents.

Won;t really be able to run anything but basic 3D games with it. For a bit of comparison, my lesser dual core Intel laptop gets 9fps on Black Ops, lowest settings at 800x600. SO dont; expect to run it, HDMI, so you can connect it to a TV or AVR easily enough (though no Blu-Ray drive).
If using just for little things like surfing and such, I'd actually suggest a smaller screen. Better battery life, much lighter, and the latest keybord have pretty good layouts. My laptop has a 10.1 inch screen and I think it's a fantastic size.
Rest of the specs look good. Webcam, 4gb RAM (may want to upgrade to 8gb, as RAM is cheap right now), 802.11N and gigabit ethernet. No Bluetooth, but will you use it?
Not a bad price, for a 17 inch. I have no experience with Acer hardware, other than monitors. If you want tough ones, my last two Toshibas adn my current HP has taken pretty good beatings. This HP I'm using now has taken 3 4-foot falls, and all is well. Though, it's a laptop/tablet type, so that helps.

I have and Acer similar to that one,let the grandkids play on it. The only upgrade, besides os,is to upgrade the ram.
All other componenets are prepriortory and are expense to get from Acer,if they are willing to sell them to you.
I wanted to upgrade the processor on mine, but its hard soldered in..no can do.

I had a acer aspire 5520 for a while - the acers with dedicated graphics are not bad - decent for gaming on most newer games lower settings. Mine had an 8400G w/ 128MB inititally but I upgraded it to 8600 w/ 256MB about half way through its life. If it has an nvidia graphics dedicated card it uses a modular format called mxm or mxm2 and it is upgradable if you can find the part online (caution though as you have to remove the entire heatpipe assemble to do it). My wife has one now with an ati 6470 chipset w/ 1GB dedicated handles Eve Online; W@W, and sims 3 very nicely

Yeah, I just wanted this for a general everyday laptop, not for gaming. I have the option to return it within 14 days, so I think it might go back. Just need to reset it back to factory.
Another laptop that was being offered is a Lenovo, 6gb 750gb, but it only has a 1.6 or 1.9 MHz processor. 15.6" screen.

It's only $20 cheaper, but the guy there said he would choose that over the Acer.
