Banned for language...never typed a word?
SupremacistWed Jun 16, 2010 4:49 am
First thing: sorry if this is the wrong place for this. I didn't see any section specifically for server issues.
So 15 mins ago I was playing the P&F BC2 server on Port Valdez (I think it was IP: 68.232.173.76:19567), enjoying myself with the m95 sniper for a change. I usually play assault, or engineer for vehicular maps.
Then out of a clear blue, I get kicked. Reason? Innapropriate language. Terms? Punkbuster PERMABAN. I had not typed a LETTER into squad, team, or game chat - either in that round or the previous round. I'm actually starting to second-guess myself because I'd never intentionally say something overtly negative beyond "MOVE IN LAZY N00BS!" in a game chat.
My in-game tag is Supremacist. Maybe some admin took offense to my name? However it's not White Supremacist, Black Sup, Yellow, etc - simply Supremacist. Even then it's not a racist term, it's simply a label. It may have a stigma, but the single word alone has no actual negative connotation. It's like the words "murder" and "gun". That's one reason I like it, it appears negative but it's deceptively & actually...not. Sgt Death, Major Killer, NaziManPwnzJ00, etc are too straigh-forward, overused and lame, and I appreciate the subliminal type of stuff. FYI I've *never* had anyone in any game, server, clan, etc ever tell me that name is inappropriate. I also recall playing in the server a few other times w.o any issue. Quite simply, I'm stumped here.
If it was due to my use of the recon kit, I was prone between 2 snipers near the spawn ridge. As far as I know the ranked status of your server hinges on the ToS EA has writen up. I actually read it thoroughly the other day (reading about Gustav spamming), and at no point playing the server was I informed of any special restrictions of the recon kit usage. Even if there was, permaban w.o warning or even a temp ban seems a little over the top. 98% of the time I am a major team player and focus on the objectives *aggressively*. I always get at least 1 m-con kill, and 2+ plants. Smoke nades FTW.
Anyways - If it was an intentional ban...well my feelings wont be hurt much because I don't like to hang with people that fly off the handle and issue permabans w.o as much as a warning. If it was an accident, well, I'd appreciate someone fixing it and making sure it doesn't happen again, and no hard feelings.

I'm not sure of the situation, all I can say is someone will look into it. I can say though that with as many people who enter our servers, it is hard to believe that you would be intentionally banned unless you were given warnings. Admins are people, and do make mistakes, that will never go away. *BK* adheres to all ToS and would never violate that based on a players' style. Our admins try to administer the servers with the same level of professionalism that we expect from them as well. Please remember that the term Supremacist does touch on areas of our rules, which state that we do not approve of anything that pertains to race, religion, sexual preference and more, which does NOT violate the ToS. I'm not sure that is part of it but to me the name does touch on those subjects in some light. But thats just my interpretation. An admin or officer will address the situation and respond accordingly. Thank you for visiting the servers and see you on the battlefield!

I'd appreciate it. I do not recall any warnings, at least specific "middle of your screen" warnings admins typically give (not that I get them much at all). I could see overlooking it in normal chat, since I get a little engrossed in the gameplay. I played for several minutes, so it's hard to believe I missed that many warnings. I do recall specifically the ban was for inappropriate language, NOT inappropriate name. It may be symantics given the game/ban mechanics, but this name is only directed at one person, me.
FYI I've visited other servers that had *far* more rules & expectations, and never received as much as a warning before. Heck one server kicked a guy for using the name "LongJohn".

sounds like you could have been accidentally banned after another player (the perpotrator) had left/fled the scene....
it will be delt with as we do take these situations seriously.
Thanks for visiting and bringing this to our attention

I was in the server when the ban took place. The ban was an agreement of a couple of admins/players on teamspeak at that time. The reason for the ban was for your name, it leans towards a rather raciest string of words.
Personally to me it doesn't bother me, the word just means the supreme leader or ruler nothing raciest or anything of that matter.
Now if your name was WSupremacist i could see a problem with that;
Feel free to join us on teamspeak; 8.9.36.132 and the port is: 9101. By doing so we can take care of this ban in a much quicker manner than the forums. Just joined and ask for an admin to pull you aside. ( Preferably Luke )

Well I've never got into the VoIP stuff, just in-game voice. Hopefully someone will review this eventually and the right decision will be made. I am still disappointed I either didn't see the verbal warnings, or wasn't even given those chances, let alone just a temp ban. What's ironic is that I'm about the LEAST racist american you'll ever meet. I have several latin relatives and even one that's black. I'm even a middle child - some of you may know how that works.

Well on a hunch I did a little research. I was browsing the BK members' names hoping NOT to find what I did, but I seem to have found several people for whom the rulels were bent for. I'm choosing not to post the names unless asked, but there are 11 possibles that break the rules (if drugs are included in the list). 7 of those are race/religion/sex, 2 of those I feel obviously cross the line, whereas supremacist hardly skirts it IMO. I know this is "your" house and you guys can run it how you want, but I honestly feel the integrity of an organization, especially one that emulates a military rule/command structure, is severely erroded when they don't live by the same rules they put forth for others to follow. Historicly, that's ALWAYS a downward spiral to infamy for a government or military group.
I do have to mention one name though, as it is pretty gross. PFC.Wafe - very vulgur pop culture/sexual preference word.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=wafe Considering that's the first thing listed on a goodl search, someone is bound to see it in the negative light.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Supremacist I hope that helps explain why we did what we did. At the time of the ban a majority of BK members online agreed that the name was not appropriate for our servers. We tried to contact you in game to ask you to change it and had no responses. If you are interested in creating a new name we will be happy to help you and unban you so you can play in our servers with a new name.

Like you say...it's their house and if they wana kick or ban for inappropriate names it's their right. Although not in their rules specifically targeted to names, they kick people and ban them for foul or drug reference names but Genblunt BK draws a pass on that issue...lol But of course that name means straightforward , not sharp, obtuse

Thanks but atm I'm on the fence at that proposition. I generally do not support hypocrisy. I mean you guys support COD World at War - the swastica itself is enough to get lynched in public, even if it's the non-reversed form that was used for centuries by Buddhists and as a symbol of good luck. Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany are the most imfamous representations of racism.
Anyways, when I do a dictionary search, I find this for racism: "As a practice, it means the same thing as racial discrimination." Discrimination then pops up "Discrimination is the
actual behavior towards another group". Placing a label on oneself does not appear to be an act upon any other person.
I guess I'll just have to be watchful of the admins in other servers now. However, at only 1 issue (including warnings up to perm bans) in a span of 2 years, 3 games, and countless private "ranked" servers played in, I don't think I have to be particularly vigilant.
fyi here's a good read:
http://www.logicalfallacies.info Not that I'm infering anything, of course.
