game locking up after the patch continued....

Nvidia says that the software (game)  should be allowed to control any graphics settings, to trouble shoot my problem, I have set all the Nividia control panel settings to default and started the game in safe mode. Now I am  slowly turning things on in the game to see what may be causing the freezes. Today I am going to work with the aspect ratio, native on my monitor is 1680x1050/16:9. Auto aspect looks bad and when I switched it on Friday from auto to 16:9 I got an instant game freeze. This is most likely a driver issue, I may try an older set for giggles. I am also going to look at updates for the  chipset and bios.

I have tried everything in the handbook:

New drivers
Updated Bios
Checked chipset drivers
Ran each card individually, GTX 275's, the game ran fine with a single card
Stress tested both cards individually with Furmark
Stress tested the CPU
Ran Mem-test
Re-installed the game
Defragmented

I have managed to get rid of the strange clipping I was getting around the fire barrels and the rock clipping has stopped, but I still have the annoying light flicker in certain hallways. I cannot run the game in SLI mode, the game freezes instantly. My current Nvidia control panel settings are all at default.  The game actually ran better than I expected with a single card and every in game setting on max, the only low FPS I encountered was in smoke, about 55-60 FPS.  I am currently running with ingame 2x AA, I will keep tweaking. My conclusion is that it is bad game code.

What resolution are you running at? If it's a higher res then you shouldn't need AA at all. And plus it takes about 20 fps off of your game I would say...

1680x1050, I went back to the 182.50 drivers and the SLI is working again, I'm getting no lower than 75 FPS (even in smoke) with 8xQ AA, I don't like jagged edges in the game, lol.

Well you do realize that anti-aliasing does make it harder to see enemies... right?

I just reinstalled the game and got new copies of the patches and so far my game and computer has NOT froze. We'll see how it goes the next few days. I have tried about half of the last 18 drivers made during the year and had no luck with them fixing it so I just uninstalled and cleared up everything on C:/ drive except I didn't regedit. There are so many combinations of possible troubles and work-arounds. Time will tell for my particular set-up.

Try 186.18 or 186.82 for you cards.  190 series drivers seems to cause problems with the 275 cards.  The thing with drivers is to find one that fits your cards.  I have two 285's and have tried a bunch to find the right mix of graphic quality, stability and the features I want.  (fan control is a must).  Beta drivers may be the fix.  Guru3D.com has links for all the drivers for you card.

As always remove drivers this way.

Swap cards and run single and sli and see what happens.  Monitor your temps with GPUZ.

RivaTuner has a built in OSD to monitor temps in game.  https://home.comcast.net/~boogie3/Riva%20guides%202.htm

BTW what is the fan speed you are running for your cards.  Max temp is 105c for the 275.  If your cards get close to this artifacts, lock ups, black screens in game and blue screens will happen.
