I lost a very close friend & fellow musician Sunday night. There was 4 of them going on a kayaking trip in N.C. & they went off the road into a ravine killing all 4 of them instantly. Davey was not driving but all 4 were drinking all day Sunday & left that evening for the river. I know one of the girls found but the other 2 friends have not been named yet. I was just at a Dead & Company concert Friday & listened to their band (Spongecake & The Fluff Ramblers) in the parking lot before going into the show. I was going to go listen to them after the show but due to the pain I was in I just went back home to TN. This was the opening show for D & Co. Tour & figured I would just meet up with them in Cincinnati for the show there. They just got a new tour bus & were going to do a mid west tour & now we are all in shock from his passing. He was a very talented young man & was taken away from us too soon. He was mentored by his father David Roberts, also a musician/songwriter.
Here is a video of them playing at SCATFR at Der Hinterhof, Leavenworth, WA July 11, 2013. Davey also known as Wavey Davey to all his fellow musicians & friends is on the left playing guitar, he also could sit in on drums, bass or mandolin if needed. Their band played bluegrass & also a rock, jazz, funk fusion electric style & also did a lot of Grateful Dead covers mixed in with their own music. He was the front man for the band & made everyone happy with his wit & charm. I have never met such a polite, caring person in quite a while, always a smile & a joke to tell, he will surely be missed by many.
Thanks Luke, just got off the phone with the founder of the band who like you had to drop out for better job opportunities to support his growing family. I am heading out to Charlotte in the morning for the memorial tomorrow evening & funeral is still not known. Mom lives in New Jersey, the dad is in St. Pete FL. & the rest is in NC.
Thanks everyone for the kind words. I got back early this morning from the memorial service in Charlotte. His Mom & dad were comforted to see how many people their sons short time with us impacted their lives. The event was also streamed to friends of Davey's that could not make it to the memorial & from what my friends in the band told me the amount of viewers was amazing. I want to thank Big Conn for the news link & want to remind everyone to wear their seatbelts. It was a horrible accident & the rear passengers might have survived if only they were wearing theirs, so please buckle up.
So sorry to hear of your loss. It's hard to lose a friend you've known awhile. I recently lost a very close fellow musician myself who was like a brother to me. It's never easy.
