I've been playing DayZ:Stand Alone edition. I love it and would definitely hang out in the community more often if we had a good group to play with. Dayz Stand alone is still in alpha stages, I wouldn't recommend anyone buying it unless they have a good understanding of what alpha stage is.
I was thinking about buying arma 3 just to try their dayz mod.

ChicagoMikey...there is actually a core group of about 5-8 of us that do play.  It is NOT BK supported, but we do have a squad setup and do play quite often.  Even if you enjoy the community for the company, you should still join BK.
